Broken key stuck in the ignition? We get it out
Keys wear thin. One cold morning you turn it and half the blade stays in the ignition. Don’t keep trying with the stub that’s left, and don’t reach for glue or a pair of tweezers. That tends to push the piece deeper.
We come to your vehicle with extraction tools made for lock cylinders and remove the broken piece when it’s technically possible.
What happens on site
- We look at how deep the fragment sits and the condition of the ignition cylinder
- We extract the broken piece with purpose-made extraction tools
- If you need a working key afterwards, we talk through options for a replacement key for your vehicle
When extraction isn’t enough
Most broken pieces come out cleanly. Occasionally the fragment is wedged so deep, or the cylinder is so worn, that extraction alone won’t get the car running. We’ll tell you straight away what we see and what your options are.
Why keys break
Years of use wear down the blade and the cuts. A heavy keyring hanging from the ignition adds strain every time you drive. If your key looks thin, bent or cracked, a spare made now is cheaper than a broken key later.
Questions about broken key extraction
Can I drive with part of the key stuck in the ignition?
Usually not. The remaining piece blocks the cylinder from turning properly. Leave it alone and call us. Forcing it can damage the cylinder.
Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?
Often the broken pieces help us read the cuts. Whether we can make a replacement on site depends on the vehicle and its key system.
