Key fob not working? Battery, programming or broken

When a fob stops working it’s usually one of three things. Here’s how to tell which one you’re dealing with before you spend anything.

Programming a push-to-start smart key fob, key fob replacement Snoqualmie WA

Dead or weak battery

  • Range gets shorter over days or weeks
  • Works when you’re right next to the car
  • Cold mornings make it worse

Swap the coin cell. The battery type is usually printed on the old one.

Lost programming

  • Fresh battery, but no response at all
  • Car shows “key not detected” or a security light
  • Problem started after a battery change or repair work

The fob may need to be reprogrammed to the car. An automotive locksmith can do this at the vehicle.

Broken fob

  • Cracked case, loose buttons or water damage
  • Hidden emergency blade missing

A replacement fob can be supplied and programmed. If only the shell is damaged, a new shell may be enough.
